Matthew 6:19-34

About the Text

(19) What does Jesus exactly mean by "treasure"? Things we save, as in a "treasure chest." This word in the original Greek language is "thesauros," from which we get the English word "thesaurus," a "treasure-chest" of words.

Does this mean we should never save money? No. God says elsewhere in the Bible that we should save diligently (Prov. 6:7, 21:20, 30:25). Rather, Jesus is saying that we should never save out of greed. We must never "love" money, but always love God.

(22) What did Jesus mean by "the eye is the lamp of the body"? The "eyes" in this verse refer to our heart. We know this because this verse is sandwiched between Jesus' sayings about having a single devotion to God in our hearts. The term "good eyes," when translated literally, means "single vision," as to say that our hearts be in single devotion to God, not to any other.

(25) What did Jesus exactly mean by "worry"? To be overly concerned - as if to think about something all the time.

(29) Who is Solomon? Solomon was one of the greatest kings of Israel, best known for his wealth. See 1 Kings 10:14-29.

(33) What did Jesus mean by "seeking his kingdom and His righteousness"? It means that we should seek the day when Christ the King rules over everything, including our lives, and the new world will be full of peace and righteousness. Christ's Kingdom began when he came to earth, and will be completed at His second commg.

(34) What did Jesus mean by "for tomorrow will worry about itself"? Jesus meant "everything will be all right," or " tomorrow will care for itself, because of God."

Key Memory Verse

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (6:33)

The Bottom Line

Don't worry about money! God's best proof that He will provide for your needs, is that He provided Jesus Christ to die for our sins, and to give us eternal life.
