This week’s devotions are written by Katie Van Koevering. Katie lives in West Michigan with her husband and two boys. They are all excited to welcome a third child to the family in April. Katie works in the Athletics Department at Unity Christian High School and serves as a leader of the worship team at Covenant Life Church in Grand Haven, MI.

Read Ephesians 2:10

My husband Cam is a residential builder. He recently started his own company and walks through the process of a build with each family from beginning to end. One part of his job that I am always amazed at is his ability to draw blueprints.

When a blueprint is drawn, there are many things to think about. Cam draws the exteriors and the interiors and they must match. If he moves a window on the outside of the house to change the look of the front, he must adjust where the window is inside as well - what if there’s a wall there or the window doesn’t work in that spot of the room? He must think about the trusses in the roof and how they will be engineered to safely hold up the home. He considers where to put rooms that will not only work in the print, but so that their use and location is practical for the homeowner.

There are many hours spent drawing a blueprint. Each change is carefully considered to honor the homeowners’ requests while still ensuring a well-constructed home. Seeing the finished home after months of looking at the print on paper is what Cam says is one of the most rewarding parts of his job.

I imagine that the feeling of satisfaction that Cam feels after finishing a home is a fraction of a reflection of the feeling that God has of his workmanship of his people. He prepared and thought about us before he created us. Every part of us and who we are as his children was considered.

As Psalm 139 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” We are a creation that he is proud of and is dear to him - praise the Lord! Because we have been given the gift not just of being created in the image of God, but of receiving grace through his Son, our actions should reflect that workmanship. We are meant to glorify God with every step we make and action in our day. As you walk through your day, think about how your works glorify him and what you can do to further his kingdom today.

“May the peace of the Lord go with you, wherever you may go.”
