For Today and This Week

Read 1 Samuel 3:1–21, paying special attention to Samuel’s response to God: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

God speaks not only to inform us, but to form us. Through His Word, our worship, our prayers, and the songs we sing, God shapes who we are and how we respond to Him.

As you read this week, consider two questions:

What is God saying?

How is God forming me through what He is saying?

Day 4 — “I'm Listening” — Chris McClarney

Song lyric of focus:

“I don't wanna miss one word You speak,

Quiet my heart I'm listening”

Theme: Discipleship requires a listening heart

Road map:

After surrender comes listening. We cannot follow someone we refuse to listen to. A disciple develops a posture of attentiveness—“Lord, what are You saying? Where are You leading? What do You want me to learn? What do You want me to do?”

Reflection:

One of the most important disciplines of following Jesus is learning to listen. We live in a world filled with competing voices, but disciples intentionally make room to hear the voice of God. God speaks through His Scripture, sometimes through prayer, sometimes through the wisdom of other believers, and sometimes through the quiet conviction of the Holy Spirit. A healthy body of Christ is made up of people who aren't simply talking to God, but are learning to listen to Him.

John 10:27 says…

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

Key take away: Discipleship requires more than knowing God's Word—we must cultivate a heart ready to hear and obey.
