This week’s devotions are written by Katie Van Koevering. Katie lives in West Michigan with her husband and two boys. They are all excited to welcome a third child to the family in April. Katie works in the Athletics Department at Unity Christian High School and serves as a leader of the worship team at Covenant Life Church in Grand Haven, MI.
Read Ephesians 2:6-7
What do you think heaven is like? Heaven might be a concept that’s talked about more in kids’ Sunday School classes than as adults. Maybe it’s something we discuss when a person who loved the Lord has passed away, and we are picturing their entrance into eternity. Probably many of us picture walking through the pearly gates and travelling down golden streets while being serenaded by choirs of angels.
Who do you picture meeting or being reunited with when you get there? I think of my friends Ashley and Angel, who were taken from this world at a young age. I think of my great-grandpa Bill who was blessed to live a good, long life, reunited with his wife and son, both who I never had the chance to meet; whole and healthy and maybe still playing bingo. I hope I get the chance to meet babies of friends and family who we never got to hold. I think of characters from the Bible; saints who welcome newcomers in and offer a tour. Will we know others as we knew them on earth? I’d like to think so, but what does that look like?
Now, picture what meeting God face to face will be like. This maybe feels the most daunting and unknown. As today’s scripture says, he “seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus”. Right there with him! This may sound daunting, as there’s judgement to face for our sins, but we get to look forward to entering eternity with him “in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus”. What a gift! An eternal gift that we can’t even fathom!
Take a minute to dream of eternity in heaven. How will it sound? What will you see? How does it make you feel? Thank God for the gift of hope that he offers us through eternity with him.
