Dear friends, today we conclude our study of the Incomprehensibility of God. We know that we will never fully comprehend our God. How could we? But he makes many promises to us in his word that our knowledge of him won’t remain limited. Remember, he desires that we know him. In this life we will grow in what we know about God and gain some comprehension of who he is as we submit to him, study his word, and grow in wisdom and faith. And one day, as we experience the fullness of the reign of Christ, our knowledge and comprehension of him will expand greatly.
1 Jn 3:2 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
Rev 22:3-4 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
We will see him face to face, and yet…
As anyone who has been married for a long time has realized, you never know everything about your spouse. You certainly didn’t know a lot before your wedding day. And even then, after decades and decades of trying, and finally getting it right once in a while when you’re supposed to know what she’s thinking, you realize that there are things you just don’t understand. Hopefully those times we lack comprehension are marked with patience, understanding, and forgiveness.
Scripture describes the relationship between Christ and his church as a marriage. Obviously, there are some differences. Christ is and always has been perfect in every way. He fully knows and comprehends everything about us. And we haven’t even arrived at the wedding yet. Clearly, we are not the same.
Coming back to Monday when we discussed the Mosaic covenant, we turn now to Jeremiah 31:31-34 for another covenant described in God’s word.
“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to[d] them,[e]” declares the Lord. 33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
This is the new covenant between Christ and his bride, the church. One day we will know him. We will see him face to face. The ‘wedding of the Lamb’ will be a celebration to end all celebrations. It will be the culmination of Christ’s saving work in his church, but for us his people, it will be just the beginning. I believe part of our eternal future with Christ will be learning more about his glory, gaining an ever-expanding list of reasons to worship him. There will be no end to that; even in our glorified state we will never fully comprehend God.
I take comfort in that fact – that God is Incomprehensible. What a great and glorious God we serve. Worship him with me today.
