Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Yesterday we looked at renewal on a grand scale–God’s work in the world to make everything
new. Today, we read Paul’s words about the renewing of our minds. Isn’t it interesting and
wonderful that the Holy Spirit is renewing all things from the widest and broadest categories, like
the earth itself, to some of the most personal categories, like our own minds?
In this verse we see a contrast. We can conform to the patterns of the world. Or, we can be
transformed by the renewing of our minds.
Isn't it often the case that when we look back at what we thought 20 years ago, 10 years ago, or
even a couple of years ago, we can see how much we have grown and changed? I am so
thankful that the Holy Spirit has renewed my mind to help me grow out of some of my less
mature stages of faith and thinking. I also hope that I’m growing in my expressions of those
maturing thoughts in the world.
What about you? Have you noticed any evidence of the renewing of your mind? Perhaps it is
happening on the level of thought–deepening ideas about yourself, others, the world, or God.
Or, perhaps it is happening on the level of action–changing patterns, flowing from a renewed
mind.
This is evidence of the Holy Spirit’s renewal. Thanks be to God!
Spend a moment and ponder an attitude or idea where your thoughts have shifted over time.
What has that process looked like? When you consider the shift, does it align with the scripture?
Do you see fruits of the Spirit?
If it does, thank God for places where you experienced the Spirit’s work in the renewal of your
mind. If it didn’t or you are not sure, seek out a wise friend who follows the scripture and the
Spirit to continue to work out those thoughts.
Invite the Spirit to continue to illuminate areas that have yet to be renewed.
