As you enter your time with God, pause for a moment of silence and rest in His presence. Our text today comes from Psalm 119:89-96. Read through the passage slowly, meditating on the words and listening as God speaks to you.

ל Lamedh

Your word, Lord, is eternal;

    it stands firm in the heavens.

Your faithfulness continues through all generations;

    you established the earth, and it endures.

Your laws endure to this day,

    for all things serve you.

If your law had not been my delight,

    I would have perished in my affliction.

I will never forget your precepts,

    for by them you have preserved my life.

Save me, for I am yours;

    I have sought out your precepts.

The wicked are waiting to destroy me,

    but I will ponder your statutes.

To all perfection I see a limit,

    but your commands are boundless. (Psalm 119: 89-96)

God Builds His Church Through His Eternal Word

In August, I had the privilege of visiting the Museum of the Bible in Washington DC. The visit was made even better with a temporary exhibit featuring the Dead Sea Scrolls. We began our day by viewing some of the oldest known copies of Biblical text - including the 10 Commandments and a passage from Isaiah. We then moved into an exhibit on the history of the Bible. Again, we saw many ancient copies of text and centuries-old Bibles and manuscripts. It was remarkable to see the way God’s word has been preserved in print.

It was also remarkable to see how language has changed over the millennia. The history of the world includes many variations of language, and even English today is different from just a century ago. The history of the Bible reflects those linguistic changes. From Hebrew to Greek and Aramaic, to Latin, to German and English and all the languages of the world.

But through it all, the ancient words of God remain the same. The readers of those old scrolls and parchment pages were hearing the same words of the same God that we read in our Bibles today.

Your word, Lord, is eternal;

    it stands firm in the heavens.

(Psalm 119:89)

The eternality of God’s word has profound implications for us today. In our rapidly changing digital world, very little stays the same. Our  new “friend,” AI,  is always changing, adapting and “learning.” Its responses are curated to reflect the questioner's bias, worldview and previous searches. As a result, we live in an era fraught with deep distrust in what we hear and read.

What a comfort to know that we can trust the words of God. Only God and His Word stand outside of and unbound by time and the changes it brings. Only God’s word is the same yesterday, today and forever. Faithful through all generations.

In Isaiah 40:8 we read,

“The grass withers and the flowers fall,

    but the word of our God endures forever.”

Centuries later, Jesus gives his disciples the same message,

“Heaven and earth will pass away,

but my words will never pass away.”

(Matthew 24:35, Mark 13:31, Luke 21:33)

The timeless, unchanging word of God tells the story of His great love for us. Whether we hear it in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, or 21st-century English, the message remains the same: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Therefore, we can join with believers throughout history, in different times, cultures, languages, and communities to worship the one true God. The eternal God who established the earth and faithfully sustains it; who knows our afflictions and brings us through them. Whose boundless commands are more than sufficient for our needs both now and in the future.

A future that is secure for all who put their faith in God.
